Rodney King was found dead in his swimming pool this morning.
He was only 47 years old.
Twenty years ago the nation - and the world - learned his name when his beating was captured on video. For the first time, the world saw that what African Americans have been complaining about all these years was actually true. They saw policemen doing to a human being what they wouldn't dare do to any animal. Through him the world was able to see how the criminal injustice system is employed against people of color.

Of course, Rodney King was not unique. He was simply one in a long list of names who suffered at the hands of those who swore to serve and protect. He didn't set out to be the symbol of police brutality but that he became. Because of him people became aware of what was being done in their name.
Just recently, Rodney released his new book, "The Riot Within: My Journey From Redemption To Rebellion." He also spoke up about that other symbol of racial intolerance and brutality, Trayvon Martin. He said when he heard Trayvon's screams it broke his heart as he recognized the screams of death. He had been there.
Well, Rodney's journey has ended. He has gone but he will never be forgotten.
