Charles Castro "was no angel," but we should demand better from our cops. Day 6 #TwitterCampaign

Charles Corey Castro was apparently a very bad man. Reports are that he may have been reponsible for the death of a former girlfriend and he’s been accused of domestice violence by his current partner. But the law prescribes a remedy for his behavior and it is not death at the hands of police. Today we continue to look at the symbiotic relationship between the police on one hand and the media with their enabling, normalizing language when reporting on police violence on the other.

Talk about an ho-hum, run-along-now-nothing-to-see-here report:

An Idaho man interviewed in relation to a Boise woman who disappeared nearly 30 years ago was killed in a police shooting on Monday.

Charles Corey Castro, 54, was shot by two Owyhee County deputies after allegedly becoming agitated and charging at the officers with a weapon, according to a press release from the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office.

Notice that the reporter dutifully provided us with reasons why we shouldn’t be concerned about the shooting of Mr. Castro. After reading the piece written by one Ms. Duggan, you’ll have no doubt that the very bad man got what he deserved and that we should spend not one second looking at this case.

Our own Angela Marx reminds us about the provisions of the 14th Amendment:

I’d urge you to add #DueProcess14thA to your list... If the Due Process promised to everyone in the 14th Amendment were actually what everyone in this country got, there would be no more of these shootings.

“No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Let’s demand that our cops obey the laws they themselves have sworn to support. Let’s demand better from our reporters.

As Ari Melber puts it, “[T]his recent activism and scrutiny alone are not bending the curve of police shootings in America.” But what if media houses were to begin to cover police violence as the existential crisis that it is? Could that make a difference? Not just reporting on some of the high-profile cases and exploiting the outrage for ratings, but actually viewing police violence as a manifestation of structural racism disproportionately impacting Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. To review police killings and question why police are emptying their weapons at people in the throes of pychotic episodes. Why are they shooting girls with knives? Why are hundreds of Black & Indigenuous folks being killed every year simply because they have guns even while white men proudly parade with them unbothered.

Let’s see if we can nudge some of them in the right direction.
