Bryant Gumbel explains "The Black Tax" and shatters the myth that economic justice solves racism

We in the Black community do not see Bryant Gumbel as one of our most militant brothers. He’s no firebrand and he will not be leading the revolution. But what he is, is the consummate professional. A man who after a groundbreaking career on network television made the successful transition to cable and currently anchors one of the most critically acclaimed shows on air. I don’t often manage to catch his show, but when I do I’m always struck anew by the superior quality of its production.

By sheer happenstance, I managed to catch the tail-end of Bryant’s “Real Sports” show this morning and I’m so happy that I did. It was powerful. It was a thing of beauty delivered without bombast and in his unique, inimitable style. It deserves to be seen by more eyes.

As we say in the Black community, “Preach!”

Gems:

Its the added burden that comes with being Black in America. And it’s routinely paid. No matter how much education you have, how much money you make, or how much success you’ve earned.

It’s about the day-in day-out fatigue of having to explain the obvious to the clueless.

It’s about having to overlook blue failings and white failings so that they can be conveniently viewed as black issues.

Damn!
